The Fabric of Time
Idea for a participatory artwork

TIME
Time is made of little sequences, tiny pieces bound together. Tim is sequential, random, yet vaguely predictable. It builds on itself - each conservative event can be traced back to the origin. Everything is connected. We are all connected. And time and space is what connects us - by creating this artwork we experience our own minute contribution to evolution, word events, history, nature. Our small contribution which is also essential as each deviation creates a different outcome.

KAIROS

ARTWORK
Visitors drop tiny coloured strings of fabric / threads between two large panels of glass. The artwork created is a random sequence of strings in texture and colour. It has two faces - it can be viewed from either side. The artwork is created over time of several months. It is series of random and unconnected events that are bound together only by the act of creation and the place of creation.

TIME - PLACE - ACT

THE INSTALLATION

Two large upright glass panels placed half a centimetre form one another and closed on the sides. Visitors climb a stair or artwork is suspended from a bridge so only the upper opening of the panels is accessible - so no one can see their actual contribution to the fabric of time in real life. The small space between the panels is paramount for the precision of dropping the strings - the precision, the smallness, the moment of drop - essential to the randomness and gives a scale to our own existence and contributions tops he fabric of time

DIGITAL PARTICIPATION
The artwork could have a digital version - a dedicated website that generates a colour pattern based on visits / clicks or other way of participation - where the fabric of time is built by adding colour pixels for example

WHEN COMPLETE
When the physical artwork is complete we can pour epoxy resin on top of it to freeze the fabric of time. We can then slice it. And we give a piece of the “time” to different cities, organisations, places, people.
